Originally, John Ringling purchased the barrier islands with dreams of a major tourist destination. Although the reality did not arrive within his lifetime, Lido and St. Armands’ Keys currently maintain world-class status featuring elegant shops, award winning restaurants and hotels. The islands are linked with bridges to the mainland of Sarasota to the east, and Longboat Key to the north.
An average year round 75-degree temperature makes this island paradise very conducive for just about anything outdoors. Bikers and roller bladers can travel along the shoreline or wend their way through park-like settings and tropical side streets. Charter a boat with or without a captain and explore the area's many bays and backwaters, or take to the ocean for deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
THE BEACHES
Like a little privacy? North Lido Beach is a pristine half-mile stretch of sand accented by towering Australian pines. Located behind residential homes, it is the least populated and perfect for walking. Perhaps you prefer being around people, making new friends and enjoying the beach scene. Mid-key, the public Lido Beach supports a swimming pool, playground, concession stand and shops. Lifeguards are on duty all year-round.
At the southern end of Lido Key, you'll find 100 acres of Australian pines, picnic tables, grills, a volleyball court and playground. Nature lovers enjoy the wooden walkways, trails and canoeing opportunities at South Lido Park.
FOOD AND EVENTS
Evening entertainment is only a short stroll away to St. Armand’s Circle. A circular park dedicated to the memory of John Ringling, is flanked by sophisticated restaurants, nightclubs, exclusive shops and exotic boutiques.
Try Cha Cha Coconuts for a sandwich and a beer or tropical drink; the Columbia Restaurant for fine Spanish dining; or Tommy Bahamas for fresh and innovative dishes overlooking the street below. The Crab and Fin offers great meals and wine while enjoying the piano music outdoors. Seafood, steak, down home cooking or eclectic fusion; Mexican, Spanish, Italian or good old American; there is an incredible restaurant for every taste with great people watching from many sidewalk bistros. For Sunday brunch, try the Holiday Inn across from the beach; for a great beachside cocktail, the Lido Beach Resort.
The sidewalks of St. Armand's are lined with beautiful flowers and trees, and the center of the circle offers a peaceful respite from your shopping. Tree-lined, shady, and full of history, the center of the circle is home to plaques immortalizing some of the more colorful circus folk in our history. Often, St. Armand's Circle plays host to popular Sarasota events, including the custom Porsche, Ferrari and Corvette shows, wine tastings and Jazz on the Circle.
